external image H21.jpgThe Allied powers threatened Japan with prompt and utter destruction if Japan did not surrender. Japan did not reply to the threat. On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb destroyed approximately 63% of the city. Between 80,000 and 120,000 people were killed instantly. Thousands more died later from burns and radiation poisoning. Later that day the U.S. dropped another atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki killing 35,000 to 74,000 people. With a devastating hit Japan was forced to surrender. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945. This ended World War II.
